Galax Elementary School
Winner of 2009 Board of Education
Excellence Award
Galax High School
Winner of 2009 Board of Education
Competence to Excellence Award
Galax is a community that values quality education as evidenced by the numerous awards and achievements garnered by our school division. In addition to the recognition by the Governor’s office, all three Galax schools are Fully Accredited as determined by the No Child Left Behind Act. One of only 17 divisions in Virginia where all schools and the division made AYP, Galax is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Galax’s commitment to education is supported by an active community and a progressive School Board that meets on the second Tuesday of every month. Our administration realizes that content, satisfied teachers love their profession and excel at it. Therefore, our goal is to provide a modern, balanced, and supportive environment that fosters personal development and achievement for students AND faculty.
The result is a 100% “Highly Qualified” faculty, as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act, compared to the state average of 98%. Our teachers have an average of 13 years of teaching experience. We utilize a successful two year mentoring program for all new teachers which sets them on the path to become extraordinary educators.
The Galax School Board ensures our teachers have the tools necessary to be efficient and effective through modern technology such as smart boards, newly renovated middle and high schools, and a low student/teacher ratio as well as low student/computer ratio.
Our high school consistently ranks in the top 10% of schools statewide in students that go on to 2 year, 4 year, or community colleges after graduation. In 1988, a group of citizens formed the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education to provide funding for students attending college after graduation. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded nearly $800,000 in scholarships to GHS graduates.
Galax City Public Schools offers students a variety of venues to achieve success academically, athletically, and civically. We have a full compliment of social clubs and sporting activities for boys and girls, many of which have won top honors in statewide competition.
Galax City Public Schools district is comprised of 3 schools:
Galax Elementary School PK - Grade 4
Galax Middle School Grades 5 - 7
Galax High School Grades 8 - 12
Once a furniture and textile town, Galax has reinvented itself with investments into broadband technology, promoting our natural beauty through our proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and New River State Park, and showcasing our cultural heritage as a major destination along The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Musical Heritage Trail. Dubbed the “World’s Capital of Old-Time Mountain Music,” Galax is a popular destination for music lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and shopping in the historic downtown.
Just 7 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, Galax covers about 8 square miles on the border of Carroll and Grayson counties and is within a 2 hour drive of several metropolitan areas such as Winston-Salem, Charlotte, NC, Roanoke and Bristol, VA - far enough to avoid the toil and turmoil of big city living but close enough for a leisurely drive.
