Mrs. Jill Campbell - Grade 8 Writing

Mrs. Jill Campbell

Jill Campbell is a native of Carroll County.  She received her bachelor’s degree in English from James Madison University and continued her education earning a master’s in Education at Old Dominion University.  Mrs. Campbell began her teaching career sixteen years ago in Grayson County. Through the years, she has taught Special Education and English at the middle school level.  She  currently teaches English 8 Writing and coaches volleyball.

Dr. E.J. Saul - English 12

Dr.Saul was an army brat who grew up all over the United States and in a couple of places that weren’t in the United States. He worked in advertising for a time after college, but decided to pursue a career in education, culminating in a doctorate at the University of Alabama in 1999. He has been working at Galax High School since 2000.

Mrs. Angela Mankins - English 8

Hi, I’m Angela Mankins. I am a native of Carroll County, although I attended Grayson County High School where I graduated in 1998. I furthered my education at Emory and Henry College with a major in education and a minor in English. In 2002, upon my graduation from Emory, I was hired by the Galax City School district. I began my teaching career twelve years ago with 9th grade and have since taught 12th and 10th grade along with an SAT prep class. I was also privileged to be the cheerleading coach for ten years. I currently teach English 8 and look forward to another exciting, rewarding year in the profession I love so much. Go Tide!

Mrs. Beth Smith English 9

 

                Mrs. Smith graduated from Carroll County High School in 1989. She began her college career at Wytheville Community College and transferred to Radford University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in English in 1993. She returned to Radford University the following year in order to complete post-graduate studies which would allow her to teach middle school. Her Master’s in Education with endorsement in TESOL was earned from Regent University.

 

            Her teaching career began for Carroll County Public Schools. In her 19 ½ year tenure there, she instructed students in English 8-12. While employed by Carroll County, she sponsored the school newspaper, AASIS, the National Junior Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. She also coached the forensics team. Her next teaching position was at Fort Chiswell High School. Her teaching responsibilities consisted of instruction in English 9-12, yearbook, and forensics. She was named Fort Chiswell High School Teacher of the Year for the 2015-2016 school year. She joins Galax High School this year as the ninth-grade English teacher.

Mr. David Fant - English 10

Mr. Fant was reared on a farm in Elk Creek, Va. He graduated high school from Virginia Episcopal School. He began his college career at Roanoke College and finished at Radford University in 1992. While teaching he continued graduate level course work in English and in Education at the Citadel in Charleston, S.C.

Mr. Fant began his teaching career at Galax High School in 1998. After teaching at Hanahan High School in Hanahan, S.C. from 2000-2003, he returned to Galax and has been teaching mainly Honors and standard English 10. Other classes taught have included Honors and standard English 11 and English 9 along with Creative Writing, Journalism, and SAT Prep.

Ms. B.J. Carroll - English 11

Ms. Carroll grew up in Greenville, North Carolina, graduated from J. H. Rose High School, and received a B.S. Degree in Speech and Drama from East Carolina University. After college, she worked with North Carolina Dance Theater and then returned to school to acquire credentials for teaching English. Her first three years as an educator were spent in Hyde County, North Carolina near the Outer Banks. In 1985, Ms. Carroll began teaching at Galax High School and has loved her tenure here. Her proudest accomplishments come with the building of theater at Galax High School. With six VHSL State Championships, she stands as the second most decorated director in the history of the VHSL. Nine individual state champions in forensics have thrived under her coaching. Ms. Carroll’s joy in working with high school students keeps her young.
