Bill Sturgill, Superintendent of Galax City Public Schools

Mr. Sturgill is a native of Hillsville, Virginia, where he graduated from Carroll County High School in 1982.  He attended Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Physical Education. He returned to school and completed his Master’s in Special Education from Radford University in 1994, then received his Advanced Studies Diploma in Administration from Virginia Tech in 1996. 

After teaching a year in Southside Virginia, Mr. Sturgill returned to the Twin Counties.  He taught Special Education and coached at Carroll County, his alma mater, for eight years before transferring to Grayson County and working as a Building Administrator and in the Central Office for seven years.  Mr. Sturgill had been in the Galax City Public School system as Principal at Galax High School for four and a half years.  In February 2009, he became Superintendent of GCPS.

Bill Sutherland, Director of CTE,Testing, and Assessment

Mr. Sutherland is a native of Galax, Virginia, where he graduated from Galax High School in 1979.  He then attended Radford University, receiving his Bachelor’s of Science in Social Science in 1983.  In 2001, Mr. Sutherland continued his education through Radford and graduated with his Master's in Educational Leadership.

After serving fifteen years at Grayson County High School as a history and government teacher, Mr. Sutherland came to Galax Middle School in 1999 to teach World Geography.  In 2000, he became Assistant Principal of Galax Middle School where he served until 2004.  Mr. Sutherland moved to Galax High School in ’04 and held the positions of Assistant Principal and Athletic Director.  From February of 2009, Mr. Sutherland was asked to take on the role of Principal at GHS.  In July of 2011 he became the Career and Technical Education Coordinator and the Division Director of Testing.

Working with all students and staff, helping each to develop to their fullest potential is a large part of Mr. Sutherland's goal as an employee of the Galax City School System.

Brandi Weatherman

Brandi is the mother of two awesome kids.  She loves seeing all the sweet faces at GES everyday.  If her family has spare time, they like to be outdoors playing with their dogs and horses and they love spending time at the river.  Brandi has lived here all of her life and she cannot think of a better place to raise her kids.

Brenda has been married for 48 years.  She and her husband have three children, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Dorie Nichols

Dorie is the wife to David “Davey” Nichols, Jr. and the mother to Sierra and Morgan Nichols.  She is a 1995 graduate of Galax High School.  She was born, raised, and currently lives in Galax, VA.  She enjoys getting to serve all the children that attend Galax Elementary School.  She enjoys participating in community theater and watching her children swim.

Dr. E.J. Saul - English 12

Dr.Saul was an army brat who grew up all over the United States and in a couple of places that weren’t in the United States. He worked in advertising for a time after college, but decided to pursue a career in education, culminating in a doctorate at the University of Alabama in 1999. He has been working at Galax High School since 2000.

Dr. Frances Turpin, Director of Student Services

Dr. Turpin is from Buchanan County, Virginia where she graduated from Whitewood High School in 1977. She attended UVA Wise and graduated with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Secondary Education in 1993. Dr. Turpin then continued her graduate studies at Radford University and graduated with a Master’s degree in Psychology in 1995 and an Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology in 1996. In 2004, Dr. Turpin was accepted into the Educational Leadership Program at Virginia Tech, and graduated with at Doctor of Philosophy degree in Administration and Supervision of Special Education in 2009.

Dr. Turpin began her educational career as a school psychologist in Surry County, North Carolina after her graduation from Radford University. Since that time, she has worked as a school psychologist in various school divisions in the region, including Pulaski County, Henry County, Montgomery County, Grayson County, and Galax City Schools. In 2010 she began serving Galax City Schools as the Director Student Services and Special Education.

Dr. Kristie Legg - Principal Galax Elementary School

Dr. Legg is originally from Dublin, Virginia and attended Pulaski High School where she graduated in 1988.  She went on to Radford University where she received her Bachelor of Business Administration in 1992, her Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in 1997, and her Master of Science in Educational Leadership in 2002.  She earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech in 2015.

Dr. Legg taught 6th and 7th grades at Pulaski Middle School for five years. From Pulaski Middle, she obtained the assistant principal’s position at Galax Elementary School and served in this position for three years.  Dr. Legg moved to Galax Middle School where she was principal from 2005 – 2015. Dr. Legg returned to Galax Elementary School in 2015.

“I really enjoy working for a small school system that is truly a community of learners.  From the elementary to middle and high, we see each student as “our” student, no matter which school the child attends.  This division is truly supported by the City of Galax, the School Board, central office, the community in which we live, our parents and students.  I often tell the faculty and staff in this division how fortunate I am to work with such a caring group of individuals who are like family.  I am proud of our schools, especially of our students,” says Legg.

Michaele Leagan - Cafeteria Manager

Michaele is originally from Washington State.  She moved to Galax in 1991.  She and her husband raised two children who both graduated from Galax High School.  They now have three grandchildren.  "My life is all about kids and family".

Miss. Allison Deel - Band

Miss Deel currently serves as Band Director of Galax City Public Schools. Before coming to Galax, Miss Deel held the band director position at Graham Middle & High Schools, in Bluefield, and before that held the band director position in Bland County.

 

Miss Deel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with Teacher Licensure, from Bluefield College. Her primary instrument is flute. However, she also plays piccolo, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, piano, as well as sings.                                                                         

 

During her time at Bluefield College, she performed in many instrumental ensembles, including the Bluefield College Chamber Ensemble, Bluefield College Concert Band, and Bluefield College Community Orchestra.  She has also performed in the choral ensembles of the non-auditioned choir Bluefield Singers, as well as the auditioned choir Variations.  As a member of Variations, Miss Deel toured Austria, in summer of 2010, and in the summer of 2011, was part of a larger choir who had the privilege of performing the Brahms Requiem at Lincoln Center, in New York. 

 

Before attending Bluefield College, Miss Deel attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. While there, she marched for one semester with the Liberty University “Spirit of the Mountain” Marching Band, where she played piccolo. 

 

Miss Deel is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association, and the Virginia Music Educators’ Association.  Miss Deel is a founding member, principal flute player, and secretary of the State Line Wind Symphony, based in Bristol, VA. Mr. Aaron Horton - Agriculture

Aaron Horton was born and raised in Carroll County, Virginia.  He was a 2001 Graduate of Carroll County High School.  Following High School, Aaron studied one year at Wytheville Community College before transferring to Virginia Tech.  Aaron graduated from Virginia Tech in 2005 with a B.S. in Wildlife Sciences and 2006 with a M.S. in Career and Technical Education with an emphasis in Agriculture Education.  Aaron has been teaching Agriculture Education for 7 years.  He taught one year in Northern Virginia and North Carolina before arriving at Galax High School 5 years ago.  Aaron is beginning his fifth year as a golf coach at Galax.  Aaron is married to Megan Horton who is a Certified Physician Assistant in North Carolina and they share their life with their two dogs Sophie and Lanie.

Mr. Rodriguez was raised in Miami, FL, until the age of 17 when he and his family moved to Sparta, NC. He graduated from Alleghany High School in 2009. He began his college education in 2015 at New River Community College and will soon finish his Associate’s Degree before enrolling in Old Dominion University to work on his Bachelor’s (then Master’s) Degree in Education. He’s an avid reader, enjoys ancient history, plays the trombone, is a self-proclaimed “comic book superhero nerd,” and loves to cook, especially Latino-inspired dishes.

Mr. Barkley is originally from Pulaski, Virginia and graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1999. He continued his education at Radford University where he received his Bachelors degree in Health and Physical Education. He began his teaching career at Galax Middle School where he has been since 2006. He also serves the school system as the Varsity Boys Soccer Coach.

“I truly enjoy teaching and coaching the students at Galax High School and middle school. There is nothing better than showing someone that with enough hard work anything is possible.”
