Mrs. Ginger Elliott

Mrs. Elliott is an instructional aide at Galax Elementary School.  She previously worked as a preschool teacher for four years at First Methodist Nursery School and First Baptist Preschool of Galax.  She is married and has three daughters that attend Galax City Schools.

Gwendolyn Simmons (Vikki) was born in Galax, Virginia and lives in Grayson County.  Ms. Simmons was a student of the Fairview Community and Galax High School.

Mrs. Brooks Edwards

Mrs. Edwards, a Galax native, graduated from Galax City Public Schoo​ls ​and Emory and Henry College, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary English.  She taught pre-school, first grade, and second grade before joining fourth grade​.

She and her husband Kevin, have three children, Peyton, Emily, and Clay.  She enjoys spending time with family and friends and reading.

Dorie Nichols

Dorie is the wife to David “Davey” Nichols, Jr. and the mother to Sierra and Morgan Nichols.  She is a 1995 graduate of Galax High School.  She was born, raised, and currently lives in Galax, VA.  She enjoys getting to serve all the children that attend Galax Elementary School.  She enjoys participating in community theater and watching her children swim.

Carri has lived in this area her whole life.  She is married and has a son.  She enjoys being outdoors and spending time with her family.

Brandi Weatherman

Brandi is the mother of two awesome kids.  She loves seeing all the sweet faces at GES everyday.  If her family has spare time, they like to be outdoors playing with their dogs and horses and they love spending time at the river.  Brandi has lived here all of her life and she cannot think of a better place to raise her kids.

Ms. Draper grew up in Farmville, Virginia, where she attended and graduated from Prince Edward County Public Schools. After high school, she attended Sweet Briar College for five years where she received her Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts with a minor in Environmental Studies and a Master's degree in K-6 Elementary Education with a concentration in K-12 Special Education. 
 
She began her teaching career at Prince Edward County Elementary School in Farmville, Virginia where she taught for four years. She taught Second Grade Inclusion, K-2 Self-Contained Special Education and was the Lead Special Education teacher for the elementary school during the 2015-16 school year. 
 
During the summer of 2016, Ms. Draper moved to Woodlawn, Virginia and accepted a teaching job at Galax Elementary School. She is very excited to work with Galax students and staff during the upcoming school year!

Ms. Megan Boyer

Mrs. Megan Boyer graduated from Grayson County High School in 2004. After high school, Mrs. Boyer attended Radford University and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2008. Mrs. Boyer has taught kindergarten, fourth, and fifth grades in Grayson County. In 2015, Mrs. Boyer completed her Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision at Regent University. Mrs. Boyer is excited to begin her journey with Galax City Public Schools teaching 2nd grade.

Ms. Stephany Perez

Ms. Stephany Perez was born in New York but was raised in Virginia. She graduated from Carroll County High School in 2011 and went on to Wytheville Community College to receive her Associates in Education and then transferred to Radford University to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Special Ed and English. After graduating from Radford in December of 2015, she began working as an ESL aide at Gladeville Elementary School. Ms. Perez is excited to start her journey as a Kindergarten teacher at Galax Elementary school.

Ms. Leigh Ann Brenegar

Leigh Ann Brinegar has lived in Galax her whole life.  She loves the area and enjoys working at the school.  She has a daughter to whom she devotes her spare time.

Ms. Whitney Stewart

Mrs. Stewart is from Galax, Virginia and graduated in 2005 from Carroll County High School. She attended Radford University where she obtained a Bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in math and English in 2009. Mrs. Stewart taught Head Start preschool for six years before joining Galax City Public Schools in 2015.

Ramona Carico

Ramona has been married to her husband Keith for 26 years.  They have one daughter (Kasey) who attends Galax High School.  Ramona loves farming, gardening, and being in the outdoors.

Brenda has been married for 48 years.  She and her husband have three children, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Michaele Leagan - Cafeteria Manager

Michaele is originally from Washington State.  She moved to Galax in 1991.  She and her husband raised two children who both graduated from Galax High School.  They now have three grandchildren.  "My life is all about kids and family".

Ms. Jamie Boyles

Jamie Boyles grew up in Galax, VA. and graduated from Carroll County High School. After high school, she worked as a sewing machine operator for a few years before continuing her education at New River Community College. In 2000 she received her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education and began her career as an instructional aide at Baywood Elementary, in Grayson County. In 2004 she came to work at Galax Elementary as a Pre-K aide. She then worked in Kindergarten for 7 years, and is now currently aiding and assisting in all grade levels and works primarily with children in reading and math groups.

Mrs. Larkin Conley

Larkin Conley grew up in Lynchburg, VA. She received a B.S. in Secondary Education (English) from Radford University and attended Lynchburg College for post-graduate studies. In addition, she is a Graduate and Graduate Assistant of The Dale Carnegie Course in Effective Speaking and Human Relations and has served as a motivational speaker for several Mary Kay events. She has over 20 years of classroom instruction experience. It began with 2 years at her alma mater, E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, followed by 10 years as a teacher/curriculum director for a private preschool in Forest. After 12 years of teaching, her family moved to Floyd where Larkin decided to become an Instructional Assistant so she could spend more time with her 2 very active sons and get involved in her new community. That decision led to 4 years in Special Education Preschool, followed by 3 years as a 1-on-1 aide to a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grader at Floyd Elementary School and chairman of numerous Floyd County committees. In August 2013, Larkin’s family moved to Galax and she commuted until March 2014 when she accepted a position at GES as a Pre-K Special Education Assistant. Through the years, she has independently attended several workshops and training related to students’ needs.

“I am passionate about helping students of all ages reach and perform at their fullest potential. I believe that what children experience during their early years affects their later success or failure in school, work, and personal lives.”

Larkin lives with her husband, Steve. They have 2 grown sons, Cole and Clif.

Ms. Mary Blackburn

Mary Blackburn grew up in Ashe County, NC.  She graduated from high school in 2003.  She married her husband Christopher in 2004. They have one son together.  Mary received her paraprofessional certificate and began working as an aide in Grayson County, VA, where she was employed for 5 years. She started working for Galax in 2013. Outside of working with children Mary enjoys camping, reading and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Terri Short

Mrs. Short is originally from Paynesville, WV. She moved to NC in 1985 and now resides in Lowgap. She graduated from Surry Community College in Dobson, NC in 2002 with an Associate of Arts Degree. She is married to Richard and has a daughter, two sons, and two grandsons. She has worked at Galax Elementary School as an instructional aide since 2004.

“I love the Galax area and the children who attend school here. The children teach me something new each day! I am honored to be a part of their early education and strive to help them achieve their goals and become strong, independent leaders of tomorrow.”

Mrs. Theresa Mawyer

      Mrs. Mawyer, born in Portsmouth, VA, spent her growing up years in Florida.  Her dad was a career Navy man so her family moved around a lot.  When he retired the family moved to this area where she graduated from Carroll County High School.  Here she met her husband Barry, who had made the Air Force his career and began travelling again.  She has lived in Texas, Maryland, Florida, Georgia, Bermuda, Alaska, Germany, as well as Virginia.  In 1994 she moved back to Galax with her family.  Both her parents and husband are from this area so she has always considered Galax "home."

     Mrs. Mawyer attended Wytheville Community College where she received an Associates in Early Childhood Development.  She enjoys reading, movies, and camping.  She started working at GES in 1999 as a Kindergarten Aide and has been involved with the PALS Program since the Fall of 2000.

     "I loved the military life and am blessed by the many opportunities it provided.  During my travels I was able to work with children of all ages, in many different capacities. I am thankful to be a small part of shaping tomorrow's future through today's children."
