Galax Elementary School: All Listings 

Mrs. Donna Jennings

Donna Jennings works as an instructional aide at Galax Elementary School.  She has worked here since 2002. She studied at Wytheville Community College and New River Community College.  She is married and has 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

Mrs. Karen Webb

Mrs. Webb is a native of Galax.  She graduated from Galax High School and attended Wytheville Community College.

She has been employed by Galax City Public Schools since 1997.  During this time she has assisted in all grades kindergarten through fourth.  Mrs. Webb feels every day is a new adventure and considers herself blessed for the opportunity to encourage the students to always do their best and treat others with kindness. 

She and her husband Phillip have two daughters and one grandson.

Mrs. Edith Mar Castillo

Mrs Edith Mar Castillo works as an ESL Instructional aide at Galax Elementary School.  She is excited to join the GES staff and looks forward to helping students learning a new language.

Ms. Jocqulene Poindexter


Jocqulene Poindexter works as an instructional aide at Galax Elementary School and has worked for Galax City Schools since 2013.  She is also the middle school softball coach. 

Mrs. Melissa Adams


Mrs. Melissa Adams began her education at Wytheville Community College.  There she earned her Associates in Early Childhood Education.  She is currently continuing her education at Old Dominion pursuing a degree in General Education.  She has been employed at GES since 2006, and has worked with pre-K through fourth grade students.  She worked in special education for four years and found herself fortunate to have had the opportunity to do so.  Those children taught her a lot!  She is currently working with the pre-kindergarten department.  This department truly creates the stepping stones needed for their continuing education.  She loves teaching this age!  On a personal note, she is very happily married to her husband, Jimmy.  They have three wonderful children:  Jimmy, Ashley, and Kyle.  They also have three awesome grandchildren:  Jordan, Addison, and Amelia and are expecting their fourth grandchild in July (a boy)!  Mrs. Adams feels that God has definitely placed her with children throughout her life.  She loves working with and teaching children.  She feels so blessed to be a part of the GES family.

Mrs. Chance Lawrence

Chance Lawrence grew up in Elk Creek, Virginia and graduated from Grayson County High School in 2005. She attended Radford University to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with concentrations in Special Education and English in 2009. Chance spent the first six years of her career teaching first and third grade in Grayson County. She is very excited to begin a new teaching adventure with Galax City Schools!

Mrs. Chenoa Montgomery

Mrs. Montgomery is a 2001 graduate from Carroll County High School.  She knew from an early age she wanted to be a teacher. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Ashworth College and a Master of Art in Teaching K-8 from Western Governors University.  Before starting her career in education, Mrs. Montgomery had the important job of a stay-at-home mom to her son, Thomas, and daughter, Alexis.  She began her career at Mount Airy Middle School in special education before joining the GES family.

Mrs. Hillary Henry

Hillary Henry is from Roanoke and graduated from Cave Spring High School in 2009. After high school she attended Radford University where she received a Bachelors of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Elementary Education and her Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in 2014. Right after finishing her education, Hillary began teaching 2nd grade at Galax Elementary in 2014 and has felt truly welcome in the Galax community. She is excited for another school year!

Ms. Crystal Sessions

Ms. Sessions is originally from Honaker, VA. and graduated from Honaker High, in 1996. She then proceeded to acquire an Associate’s Degree from Southwest VA Community College. After having her daughter, Alyssa, she continued her education at Virginia Intermont where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.

Her teaching career began at Galax Elementary School in 2001. After teaching at Galax for a few years, she continued her education through East Tennessee State University. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in Mathematical Science in 2006.

She moved to Jacksonville, NC in 2008, where she continued to teach and work as a math facilitator amongst several of the schools in Onslow Co. While in Jacksonville, she had a son, Briar.

In 2013, she moved back to Galax, to continue her teaching career.

“I have always had a passion for math. Students don’t always come to my room with a love for math, but my goal is to change that feeling within my students, and to show them all that they can conquer math if they are determined to.”

Ms. Sabrina Holden

Mrs. Sabrina Key Holden is a first grade teacher at Galax Elementary.  A Galax native, she graduated from Galax High School in 1986 and earned an Associate in Arts and Sciences from Wytheville Community College.  She transferred to Radford University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Education.



She taught second grade for eight years until answering a higher call in 2001 to be a stay-at-home mom.  While enjoying time with her babies, born in 2000 and 2003, Mrs. Holden taught home-bound students for Galax City Public Schools until her daughter Kaitlyn was ready for Kindergarten and Branden was a second grader.  Mrs. Holden returned to GES in 2008 and have taught fabulous first and second graders ever since.

Ms. Kim Hundley

Ms. Hundley is from Hillsville and graduated from Carroll County High school.  After high school she attended Radford University where she received a Bachelors of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Social Sciences and Special Education.  She also acquired  her elementary teaching certification for grades K-5.  Afterwards, Ms. Hundley attended Emory and Henry College where she earned her Masters of Art degree in Education with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist for grades K-12.  


Ms. Hundley worked in Carroll County for one year as a special education teacher.  She came to Galax Elementary School in 1999 and has since taught Kindergarten, second grade, and third grade.

Ms. Sarah Jenkins

Sarah Jenkins grew up in Mechanicsville, Virginia and graduated from Atlee High School in 2009. She attended Emory & Henry College where she received her Bachelor of Arts: Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, as well as her Master of Education:Professional Studies in 2014. Ms.Jenkins earned endorsements pertaining to Special Education K-12 and English as a Second Language.

Ms. Jenkins moved from Richmond, Virginia when she was hired to teach 1st grade. She began teaching 1st grade at Galax Elementary in 2014, shortly after graduating from Emory & Henry. She is extremely blessed to work with such an incredible team!  “I am so thankful for the community and support that Galax offers. I cannot even begin to put into words how thankful I am to work with such amazing individuals, as well as the students. I am looking forward to another great year!”

Mrs. Sherry Lumpkin

Mrs. Lumpkin grew up in Pulaski County and graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1985.  Her undergraduate work is through Radford University and she has a Bachelor's degree in Music Education.  She also did her graduate work at Radford University and graduated with a Master's degree in Elementary Education in 1992. 

Mrs. Lumpkin taught PreK-5th grade Music for 1 year in Dinwiddie County, VA, Kindergarten for 9 years in Wythe County before coming to Galax in 2003. Since coming to Galax she has taught PreK 1 year, Kindergarten and looped 1 year to First Grade.  She has taught 23 years.

Mrs. Lumpkin and her husband Trace moved to Galax from Pulaski in 2003. Trace is the Aquatics Director for the Recreation Department. They have 2 children. Austin graduated from GHS this year and Savanna is a 10th grader at Galax High School. When not during school hours Mrs. Lumpkin spends her time as a taxi driver and cheerleader to her kids and the activities they participate in.  She loves to scrapbook traditionally and digitally, play the piano and read numerous blogs trying to find ways to make her instruction for fun for her students.

Ms. Tara Branham

Ms. Branham grew up on a farm in central Virginia.  She graduated from William Monroe High School; where she then went on to earn a degree from Concord University.   After teaching a couple of years, Ms. Branham then went back to school and received a graduate degree from Emory & Henry College.  She has been teaching first grade at Galax Elementary School for twelve years. She also taught Title 1 reading for four years with Madison County Public Schools. Ms. Branham is currently teaching first grade and this is her seventeenth year teaching.  She enjoys spending time with her two children, as well as hiking, running, and biking.

Mrs. Amanda Evans

Amanda Evans is a 2004 graduate of Grayson County High School. She went on to Radford University to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Special Education. After graduating from Radford in 2010, Amanda worked at Galax Elementary School as a paraprofessional and was later hired as an elementary school teacher. She taught third grade her first year and has taught two years in Pre-Kindergarten. She is currently teaching Kindergarten.

Ms. Sara Robinson

Sara Robinson

Sara Robinson has taught at Galax Elementary School for over 20 years. She graduated from Emory and Henry College with a B.A. in Religion. Then she received a B.S. in Early Elementary Education from Radford University. Ms. Robinson also has a Master of Arts degree in Reading from Emory and Henry. 


When not teaching, she enjoys church work and spending time with family and friends.

Mrs. Wendy Belcher

Mrs. Belcher grew up in Pulaski County Va. and graduated from Pulaski County High School. She is married and has 6 children between the ages of 13 and 7. She is active in her church, Cornerstone Community Church in Galax. She and her husband enjoy all the various sports and school activities her children are involved in including football, softball, basketball, wrestling, track, and band.

Mrs. Belcher received her Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and her Master’s in Education through a dual licensure program at Radford University. Mrs. Belcher began her teaching career at Galax Elementary in 2009 as the pre-school special education teacher.

Mrs. Susan Hoch

Mrs. Hoch grew up right here in Galax, and graduated from Galax High School. After graduation, she attended Surry Community College for one year, and then transferred to Penn View Bible College in Pennsylvania for another year of general studies.   After studying in Pennsylvania for a year, Mrs. Hoch returned to Galax and began working. She worked in the banking industry for 6 years, which was followed up by 6 years in the medical field.   While working in the medical field, she attended college and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Lees-McRae College in May 2006. In 2009, Mrs. Hoch began work on her master’s degree, graduating from Radford University in May 2012 with a master’s degree in literacy education.

Mrs. Hoch began her teaching career at Galax Elementary School as a third grade teacher. She taught 3rd grade for 5 years, and dearly loved teaching her 3rd graders. In 2011, Mrs. Hoch accepted the position of Reading Specialist at Galax Elementary School and is currently serving in that capacity.

“I have always had a passion for reading, and helping struggling readers overcome their difficulties is so rewarding. Working to continually improve our reading instruction, as well as working with struggling readers, is a dream come true.”

Mr. Freddie Bobbitt - Resource Officer

Officer Bobbitt grew up in this area and has been a lifelong residence of the Galax/Carroll County Area. He graduated from Carroll County High School. After high school Officer Bobbitt went to work with his Dad and Grand Dad on the farm while also working with the Carroll County School System in the Maintenance Department. During this time, Bobbitt was offered a job with the Hillsville Police Department. He worked with the Hillsville Police Department for 2 years then took a job with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.  Twenty-eight years later he retired from this position. Shortly thereafter, Bobbitt went back to work with the Pulaski County Sheriff's office for 1 year then took his current job with the Galax Police Department as the School Recourse Officer for Galax Elementary School.

Over 30+ years of service Officer Bobbitt has been involved in many aspects of law enforcement from patrol duties to undercover operations. He has been on state and federal taskforces.  These taskforces involved Bobbitt and his fellow officers in many operations, including drug and gun violations, and fugitive recovery. He has been cross sworn on both the state and federal level. Worked with the Virginia State Police, The DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency),ATF (Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms) and The U.S. Marshalls Office.

Bobbitt says, "All of my Law Enforcement career has been very pleasant and rewarding but nothing has compared to my current position as a School Resource Officer. Of all of my career this job has been the most REWARDING. I love my job and the opportunity that has been given to me as a School Resource Officer.

I am a Graduate of The New River Regional Police Academy. I have several specialty training certifications both state and federal.

Mrs. Tiffany Norman - Bookkeeper

Mrs. Norman was born and raised here in Galax, VA. She graduated from Galax High School in 2013. She then attended Wytheville Community College obtaining an Associate’s Degree in Administrative Support Technology. In 2014, she married to her husband, Jody. After getting married, they adopted a dog, which they named Maggie.

Mrs. Norman began work as bookkeeper/secretary at Galax Elementary School in 2015.
