Mr. Patrick Butler - Secretary/Bookkeeper

227.jpg

What would lead a person to come out of semi-retirement for full-time employment? Working at Galax Middle School, of course. My roots are in education what with my mother having been a school librarian, my dad being a minister, and my own designs on teaching while in college. However, following my college education, I got sidetracked by the notion of being in the Air Force. . .a notion that stuck with me for more than 21 years. I moved to Galax in 2002 where I continued my second career as a stay at home dad for my daughter Catherine. Some strange force compelled me to become a full-time instructor at GMS for the 2011-2012 school year and then a locum tenens classroom specialist (i.e., substitute teacher) ever since. Moving into the secretary’s position at GMS seems like a natural progression, a place where I can still influence young minds and keep in touch with my educational roots. When not working, I enjoy spending time navigating the vagaries of teenage-dom with my daughter, spending money on numerous trips to Disney World with my wife Chris, spending hours holding my two grandkids in Florida, and wasting a good walk by golfing.
