Michelle Garvey, Galax Elementary School Principal

Mrs. Garvey, formerly Ms. Zipprich, is originally from Illinois and graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1991. Mrs. Garvey’s first career was in telecommunications. Upon moving to Galax in 1999, she spent several years as a stay at home mom to her son Alex.

She attended Radford University and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education PK-6 with a concentration in Math and Science. Upon graduation, she was employed by Galax City Public Schools as a Fourth Grade Teacher. Mrs. Garvey returned to school in 2011 and obtained a Master’s of Science degree in Educational Leadership from Radford University.  In the fall of 2016, Mrs.Garvey accepted a new position as the Instructional Technology Resource Teacher for Galax City Public Schools.

Mrs. Garvey loves being an educator and is excited to take on her role as Principal at Galax Elementary School. She says, “My greatest joy comes from watching students and teachers grow and reach beyond what they believe is possible. I love Galax City Public Schools and can’t imagine working in a more incredible school system anywhere!”

Miss. Allison Deel - Band

Miss Deel currently serves as Band Director of Galax City Public Schools. Before coming to Galax, Miss Deel held the band director position at Graham Middle & High Schools, in Bluefield, and before that held the band director position in Bland County.

 

Miss Deel holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with Teacher Licensure, from Bluefield College. Her primary instrument is flute. However, she also plays piccolo, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, piano, as well as sings.                                                                         

 

During her time at Bluefield College, she performed in many instrumental ensembles, including the Bluefield College Chamber Ensemble, Bluefield College Concert Band, and Bluefield College Community Orchestra.  She has also performed in the choral ensembles of the non-auditioned choir Bluefield Singers, as well as the auditioned choir Variations.  As a member of Variations, Miss Deel toured Austria, in summer of 2010, and in the summer of 2011, was part of a larger choir who had the privilege of performing the Brahms Requiem at Lincoln Center, in New York. 

 

Before attending Bluefield College, Miss Deel attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. While there, she marched for one semester with the Liberty University “Spirit of the Mountain” Marching Band, where she played piccolo.

Mr. Aaron Horton - Agriculture

Aaron Horton was born and raised in Carroll County, Virginia.  He was a 2001 Graduate of Carroll County High School.  Following High School, Aaron studied one year at Wytheville Community College before transferring to Virginia Tech.  Aaron graduated from Virginia Tech in 2005 with a B.S. in Wildlife Sciences and 2006 with a M.S. in Career and Technical Education with an emphasis in Agriculture Education.  Aaron has been teaching Agriculture Education for 7 years.  He taught one year in Northern Virginia and North Carolina before arriving at Galax High School 5 years ago.  Aaron is beginning his fifth year as a golf coach at Galax.  Aaron is married to Megan Horton who is a Certified Physician Assistant in North Carolina and they share their life with their two dogs Sophie and Lanie.

Mr. Chad Stanley - History

Mr. Stanley has lived most of his life in the Fries area of Grayson County.  He graduated from Grayson County High School in 1990.  He then earned his bachelor of science degree from Radford University.  Mr. Stanley began his teaching career at Galax Middle School in 1994 where he has taught until present.  During these years, Mr. Stanley has taught sixth grade U.S. History and seventh grade Civics and Economics.  Mr. Stanley's goals for his students include helping them become engaged in government and the political processes of our great country.

Mr. Charles McPeak - Auto Mechanics

Mr. McPeak grew up in Draper, Virginia and graduated from Pulaski County High in 1988.  He attended and graduated from New River Community College in 1997, earning an ASE certification as a mechanic. Mr. McPeak was hired by the Chrysler dealership in Radford, Virginia shortly before he graduated. He served as an ASE certified master auto technician there for 14 years. Mr. McPeak was hired by Galax City Schools as the ASE certified auto instructor in 2010.

Mr. David Fant - English 10

Mr. Fant was reared on a farm in Elk Creek, Va. He graduated high school from Virginia Episcopal School. He began his college career at Roanoke College and finished at Radford University in 1992. While teaching he continued graduate level course work in English and in Education at the Citadel in Charleston, S.C.

Mr. Fant began his teaching career at Galax High School in 1998. After teaching at Hanahan High School in Hanahan, S.C. from 2000-2003, he returned to Galax and has been teaching mainly Honors and standard English 10. Other classes taught have included Honors and standard English 11 and English 9 along with Creative Writing, Journalism, and SAT Prep.

Mr. Dustin Carter - Physics and Engineering

Mr. Carter was born in Galax and graduated from Grayson County High School. Following high school, he attended Emory & Henry College, graduating with a B.S. in Math/Physics. Mr. Carter taught at Grayson County High School for four years.  In the fall of 2013, he accepted a position at Galax High School to teach physics and math.

Mr. Eddie Stanley - Custodian

Mr. Eddie Stanley  has worked for Galax City Public Schools since 1987.  He worked at Galax Elementary School for 20 years.  He is currently the custodian at Galax Middle School. 

Mr. Freddie Bobbitt - Resource Officer

Officer Bobbitt grew up in this area and has been a lifelong residence of the Galax/Carroll County Area. He graduated from Carroll County High School. After high school Officer Bobbitt went to work with his Dad and Grand Dad on the farm while also working with the Carroll County School System in the Maintenance Department. During this time, Bobbitt was offered a job with the Hillsville Police Department. He worked with the Hillsville Police Department for 2 years then took a job with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.  Twenty-eight years later he retired from this position. Shortly thereafter, Bobbitt went back to work with the Pulaski County Sheriff's office for 1 year then took his current job with the Galax Police Department as the School Recourse Officer for Galax Elementary School.

Over 30+ years of service Officer Bobbitt has been involved in many aspects of law enforcement from patrol duties to undercover operations. He has been on state and federal taskforces.  These taskforces involved Bobbitt and his fellow officers in many operations, including drug and gun violations, and fugitive recovery. He has been cross sworn on both the state and federal level. Worked with the Virginia State Police, The DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency),ATF (Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms) and The U.S. Marshalls Office.

Bobbitt says, "All of my Law Enforcement career has been very pleasant and rewarding but nothing has compared to my current position as a School Resource Officer. Of all of my career this job has been the most REWARDING. I love my job and the opportunity that has been given to me as a School Resource Officer.

I am a Graduate of The New River Regional Police Academy. I have several specialty training certifications both state and federal.

Mr. George Edmondson- World History II, Economics and Personal Finance

Mr. Edmondson was born in Richmond, VA and grew up in Victoria, VA in the Southside region. He graduated from Central of Lunenburg High School and Southside Virginia Community College in 2008 and pursued his education by attending Virginia Tech where he majored in History and minored in both Leadership and Social Change and Political Science. After graduating in 2012, he attended Liberty University where he received a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education.

George completed his student teaching at Galax High School with current coworker Kenny Brooms before being hired in 2013 as a Special Education Aide at Galax Elementary. Since then, he has substituted and worked as a Library Aide until being hired as a full-time teacher in 2015. He now teaches World History II, World Geography, and Economics and Personal Finance, as well as, coaches volleyball and soccer, and sponsors National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Mr. Burnett grew up in Woodlawn, Virginia.  He taught and coached at Patrick County High School for several years before coming to Galax High School.  Currently, Mr. Burnett teaches VA and US History History.  He is a Virginia Tech Hokie, Washington Nationals, and Washington Redskins fan.  Mr. Burnett likes to stay active in the community, church, and sports.  He coaches baseball and girls basketball at GHS.  He and his wife Christy have 3 children, Lance, Laiken, and Laynee.

Mr. Howard Mayo

Coach Mayo is originally from Chesterfield i, Virginia and graduated from Lloyd C. Bird High School in 1983. He continued his education at Bluefield College where he received his Bachelors degree in Physical Education and Social Studies in 1988.He play basketball for 4 years .  He has taught and coach at Carroll Co High School, Amelia Co High School, Starmount High School (NC) and Mt Airy, NC . Coach Mayo is married to Deborah Easter Mayo and has three children Alex, Abby, and Adam  and they reside in Fancy Gap, VA

 Coach Mayo is currently the Strength and Conditioning Coach and the Girls Basketball Coach at Galax High School. Coach Mayo is looking forward to working with students from both the high school and middle school

Mr. James Kohl is a graduate of Galax High School. He has had the privilege to spend time abroad in many Spanish speaking countries including Spain, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.  Mr. Kohl is very excited to be starting a new school year here at GHS.

Mr. Jarrod Wilson - Art

Mr. Wilson is a native of Galax and a graduate of the 1993 class of Galax High School. After high school he attended Surry Community College in Dobson, NC, earning an Associate in Arts, in Pre-Liberal Arts Studies. After attending SCC, he matriculated to Radford University where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with a Two-Dimensional concentration in 1999. He is presently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in watercolor at Radford University. The MFA in watercolor is a rare degree offered by few colleges and universities in the United States. He is currently studying under the tutelage of the internationally recognized watercolorist, Professor Z.L. Feng.

Mr. Wilson began his teaching career at Galax Elementary School in February of the 2001-2002 academic year. In the fall of 2011 Mr. Wilson moved to Galax High School to take over the art position vacated by the long-time GHS art teacher, Debbie Adams. (Mrs. Adams was Jarrod Wilson’s high school art teacher.)

Mr. Wilson paints in Realism and Photo Realism. His primary subject matter today is the American automobile; however, on occasion he still does portraiture, working in watercolor, oil, graphite, and pen and ink. Examples of his portraiture in oil are installed in the permanent collection at Lee University, Cleveland, TN, and at the Lovell R. Cary Ministry Resources Building in Manila, the Philippines. He is also a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society and the fraternal honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.
